AllMusic Review by

Not his best, it's still a nice sampler of Basie during 1942-46 with ten studio recordings, including a remake of "One O'Clock Jump," the classic "It's Sand Man, " "Avenue C, " two features for tenorman Illinois Jacque ("The King" and "Rambo") and the hard-swinging "Taps Miller" among the more memorable selections. Although Lester Young was gone, such distinctive soloists as trumpeter Harry Edison, trombonist Dickie Wells and tenors Buddy Tate, Don Byas and Jacquet helped fill in the gap.
