AllMusic Review by

Anthology Album is actually the CD reissue title of the old United Artists Legendary Masters Jan & Dean double album, which was the best historical overview of the duo ever done on vinyl. It remains competitive on CD, despite the existence of more comprehensive collections such as All the Hits: From Surf City to Drag City. The single-CD Anthology Album is less than half the price of the latter double disc, and it gives the listener a big chunk of the biggest hits and best songs by the duo from 1958 through 1968, from "Jenny Lee" to "Vegetables," encompassing their evolution from a doo wop-style team into a surf outfit. The original annotation by Dean Torrence, Martin Cerf, Dave Marsh, and Ben Edmonds is reprinted, albeit in very tiny type, along with all of the original art work, which was considerable. Coupled with good sound and a low price, this is probably the best Jan & Dean compilation that the casual listener can buy, although anyone merely looking for an hour's worth of fun beach and car music might also want to check out Gotta Take That One Last Ride, which is more of a pure party album, without the scope of this collection.
