This fascinating document offers crystal clear recordings of Haitian vodou dances and rituals, as well as an informative book about the culture and belief system. What is most important when considering this music is that it is devotional, not to some dark spirit, but to a force that can solve problems and bring happiness. The music is based upon voice and rhythm, with traditional call and response structures. Even without reading the accompanying text, the joy of the music is clearly evident, dispelling the popular myth that vodou is evil black magic rather than a heartfelt communication with the spirit world.
