Alter Ego arose out of the Harthouse label's techno-trance affiliations, but the band was always the exception rather than the rule. Stylistically, it had far more in common with many of Warp's "bleep" artists than its hard dance labelmates. Check out the names that contribute to this sterling disc of remixes: Andrew Weatherall's Two Lone Swordsmen project, Wishmountain, and Alter Ego itself.

Weatherall outdoes himself on one of the "Lycra" remixes, where he carves rubbery basslines out of blocks of synthetic foam in the service of music for the beanbag chair generation. Wishmountain (Matt Herbert), however, goes all elastic ping-pong on his tight-fitting "Lycra" mix, buzz saw beats pounding out house, not techno. The highlight here is an unreleased Ego-maniacs track, "Electric Bedroom," whose rhythms sound like sticks banging on tin cans, while fluttering sequencers squelch amidst gently hissing columns of air. ALTERISM is an immersive slice of pure IDM (intelligent dance music) bliss.
