The most interesting thing about A Tribute to P. Diddy is its eager, scrappy instrumental reworkings of the numerous (and expensive) samples featured in the work of its feted artist. Sean "Puffy" Combs has never been known as a rapper, so the mic skills employed here by a bevy of studio types and unknown up-and-comers often outpace the Puffy-penned rhymes they're spitting. But "Saga Continues," "Been Around the World," "Can't Hold Me Down," and "All Night Long" are all built prominently around samples, and listening to their backing tracks reworked to emulate those interpolations is mindless fun.
