Pianist/keyboardist Vernell Brown began his recording career with this CD when he was 18. When one considers that not only is he the main soloist but he contributed all eight originals and their arrangements, this was a very impressive debut. The music ranges from straight-ahead to kinda funky and poppish. Brown is heard in a variety of different small-group settings; best is a trio outing with bassist John Patitucci and drummer Stix Hooper on "Vernellergize," but less worthy is "Rise of the Gods" (which has a bit of section trumpetwork by Herb Alpert) and some of the more lightweight tunes. Still, it was obvious from this music that Vernell Brown had a potentially significant future.
