AllMusic Review by

A Rare Slice of Country collects 26 radio transcriptions from programs recorded several years apart in the early and mid-'50s. The early tracks predate Wagoner's stardom and find him hewing more closely to the sound of Hank Williams. The later recordings offer more instrumental variety and some pretty elaborate vocal arrangements for transcription recordings, particularly on the excellent "Pay Day." Jim Reeves and Red Foley appear as MCs, and their banter with Wagoner and song introductions are included. Renditions of several of Wagoner's hits appear, including "A Satisfied Mind," "Eat, Drink and Be Merry (Tomorrow You'll Cry)," and "Uncle Pen." Entertaining and interesting, A Rare Slice of Country will please collectors and casual listeners.
